The Effects of Nicotinic Acid on the Lipid Metabolism in Patient with Atherosclerosis

Abstract
|
|
|
Nicotinic acid was given to 15 patient with atherosclerosis, with a daily dose of 2 grams for 24 weeks.
The serum cholesterol, phospholipid and c/p¢¥ ratio were determined.
The following result were obtained:
1. Nicotinic Acid caused a marked fall of total cholesterol level (Above 50mg%) in 12 cases (80%)
2. Cholesterol/phosphalipids ratio decreased (1.27-1.0) significantly after 24 weeks medication of Nicotinic acid.
3. Nicotinic acid appear to have one of the most effective antilipemic agent.
4. Some side effects such as nausea and heartburn were noted in 5 cases.
